It was not difficult to install, however it did take us a little over an hour. The instructions estimated it would take just 15-30 minutes. It appears in every way to be a sturdy, well constructed light.The description refers to the light as "Dark Wood", but I would describe it as antique black and it looks more like metal than wood. I believe this is a positive, as it add more character and charm. The shades are very basic in design. They fit over a metal frame like a slipcover, which I believe will make them easier to clean. I currently have the shades on, but thought the chandelier looked nice without them as well. What I really like about this chandelier is the view of the decorative base as you look up from the table. I am writing today to Customer Service to see if I get a replacement and or fixing it. Candles just don't provide enough light. We live in a more rural setting and it is pretty dark outside (we always eat after 7:30). Now that we have this Royce Chandelier, it's like having a whole other room - except it's outside! (and it doesn't have to be dusted!!!!) We love this chandelier! We have it on a remote and sometimes we leave it on even after we have finished eating because it is so pretty! (not too long though - we don't like to pollute the environment with light - ) But the light is great! I can't believe we've lived here without it for 25 years! Up close, I think the finish is just OK, (it's kind of a mottled brown and black) but from a distance and at night, you don't even see it.
